I not only have this scene burned into my mind, but even remember the title of the chapter: “The Darkest Hour is Just Before Dawn.” My childish self of course sympathized with Laura. I was obsessed with those books, and must reread LHOP since my Anglo-biased mind did not take in the racism at the time.
